Justin & Erin’s Downtown Chicago Engagement Session | Chicago Wedding Photographer
If you’re dreaming of a Chicago engagement session that captures the energy of the city, Justin and Erin’s downtown shoot was the perfect example of how iconic Chicago locations, spontaneous moments, and a little adventure can create unforgettable photos.
From the fountains of downtown to golden hour on the lakefront, this Chicago engagement session had a little bit of everything — city streets, the iconic train, skyline views, and even a spontaneous beach moment.
As a Chicago wedding photographer, sessions like this are always some of my favorites because the city naturally tells a story.
Starting the Session at Buckingham Fountain
Justin and Erin’s engagement session began at one of the most iconic locations in the city — Buckingham Fountain in downtown Chicago.
With the skyline surrounding us and the energy of the city all around, this was the perfect place to start their Chicago engagement photos. The fountain provided a classic Chicago backdrop while the surrounding gardens and walkways allowed us to capture both romantic and playful moments.
We spent time wandering the paths nearby, letting Justin and Erin simply enjoy the moment together while I documented their connection in a natural, documentary style.
This part of the city always feels timeless, which makes it perfect for couples wanting engagement photos that feel both editorial and authentic.

- Walking shots around the fountain
- Close candid laughter moments

Wandering the Streets of Downtown Chicago
After starting at the fountain, we explored some of the smaller streets and hidden corners of downtown Chicago.
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions in Chicago is that you never need to stay in one place. The best photos often happen while simply walking through the city together.
Justin and Erin leaned fully into the experience — laughing together, stopping for quick photos in alleyways, crossing busy streets, and embracing the spontaneous moments that make Chicago engagement sessions feel alive.
From classic architecture to the buzz of traffic and pedestrians, every block gave us another unique backdrop.
Capturing the Iconic Chicago “L”
No Chicago engagement session feels complete without incorporating the iconic train.
We made our way to one of the L stops where Justin and Aaron hopped on the platform while trains passed behind them. The combination of motion, city noise, and dramatic lighting created some of the most dynamic photos of the session.
These images feel unmistakably Chicago.
The movement of the train paired with the stillness of the couple creates such a cinematic moment — something that always feels editorial and timeless.
Photo ideas for this section:
- Platform photos with train approaching
- Motion blur train shot
- Couple laughing while waiting on platform
- Walking down stairs or along tracks

A Quick Stop for McDonald’s (Because Real Life Happens)
One of my favorite parts of this session was actually an unexpected moment.
After walking around the city for a while, we made a quick stop at McDonald’s to grab some water and a quick snack before continuing the session.
These little in-between moments are something I always encourage couples to embrace. Engagement sessions don’t have to feel overly structured — sometimes the most memorable photos happen during spontaneous breaks like this.
Honestly, grabbing a drink and laughing together inside a Chicago McDonald’s is a perfect representation of a real date night.
Golden Hour at Oak Street Beach with the Skyline
We made our way to one of the most beautiful lakefront locations in Chicago — Oak Street Beach.
Located right by the historic Drake Hotel, this spot offers some of the best skyline views in the city.
Golden hour was just beginning as we arrived, which meant soft glowing light reflecting off Lake Michigan and the skyline behind them.
This part of the session felt calm and romantic compared to the busy downtown streets earlier.
Justin and Erin laid out a small picnic setup on the beach, enjoying the view and soaking in the moment together while the sun dipped lower in the sky.

Ending the Night with Lake Michigan and Direct Flash Photos
Of course, we couldn’t end the session without a little adventure.
Justin and Erin decided to run into the water for a few moments — laughing, splashing, and fully embracing the fun of the evening.
We finished the session with a few direct flash photos on the beach, creating that editorial, late-night city vibe that pairs so perfectly with Chicago engagement sessions.
The result was a mix of romantic, cinematic, and playful images that truly felt like them.
Why Chicago is Perfect for Engagement Sessions
Engagement sessions in Chicago offer an incredible mix of locations within just a few miles:
- Iconic landmarks
- Historic architecture
- The Chicago L train
- Lake Michigan beaches
- Skyline views
- Hidden alleys and city streets
This variety allows couples to create engagement photos that feel like a true reflection of their relationship and their life in the city.
Justin and Erin’s session captured all of that beautifully.
Planning Your Own Chicago Engagement Session
If you’re planning a Chicago engagement session, I always recommend choosing a few locations that feel meaningful to your relationship. Popular examples are: a favorite coffee shop, neighborhood streets, the lakefront, or a Chicago landmark.
The goal is to create photos that feel natural, cinematic, and uniquely yours.
As a Chicago wedding photographer, my approach is always documentary-inspired. I want your session to feel less like a photoshoot and more like an experience together.
